More: Alcoholism (Continued)
C: So we see through example after example, that Bill is reinforcing the idea, that we've got to have this spiritual experience in order to recover from the disease. That we are insane. We can only be restored to sanity, restored to believing the truth, with the aid of a Power greater than we are, through having this spiritual experience.
Bottom of page forty-three. (p. 43, par. 4) 'Once more: The alcoholic at certain times has no effective mental defense against the first drink. Except in a few rare cases, neither he nor any other
human being can provide such a defense. His defense must come from a Higher Power.'
Now then, I'm convinced, absolutely. By going beck and showing me the insanity, I am convinced that if I don't find this Power greater than I am, that I'm probably going to die from the disease of alcoholism. That doesn't mean I like the idea. That doesn't mean that I'm just going to accept this spirituality into my life and just be as happy as I can be about it. Because I still have certain aversions to this
term at this stage of the game.
I still have certain aversions to anything that sounds like religion or spirituality. Still don't like the idea of being so weak that I've got to have a Power greater than I am. Still don't really understand where I stand spiritually or in my relationship with God that I do not understand. Thank God for "Alcoholics Anonymous," the book "Alcoholics Anonymous." Because within this book, not only is it going to give me the opportunity to have a God of my own understanding, but it's also going to give me a new understanding of God.
